Sample Technical Advice
Question: What effect will the newer aluminum anodes used to protect outboard motors and outdrive units have on a boat plugged into shore power? Answer: The newer aluminum anodes operate at a much higher voltage potential than the normal zinc anodes. When plugged into shore power, a properly wired and bonded boat with aluminum anodes will try to protect every boat in the marina that has a zinc anode. A recent survey confirmed this when it was found that a pair of twin Yamaha engine aluminum anodes was putting a full 500 milliamps (0.5 amps) into the dock ground wire. These anodes would have been consumed in less than a month. A galvanic isolator (UL Marine Listed) must be installed to prevent this.
